Changes to telemedicine coverage for Medicare patients

Effective October 1, 2025, several telemedicine flexibilities for patients have expired. For patients insured by a government program, this impacts any upcoming virtual visits with your healthcare provider. 

Learning experiences

Residents will be exposed to a wide variety of required and elective experiences. The schedule will be determined by the resident and the residency program director during the orientation period but is always subject to change. 

Required (5 weeks):

  • Emergency medicine
    • Adult EM 1 (6-8 weeks)
    • Adult EM II
    • Adult EM III
    • Pediatric EM
    • EM precepting
    • EM nights or community (3 weeks)
  • Adult critical care (1 required)
    • Medical ICU (MICU)
    • Neuroscience ICU (NSICU)
    • Surgical-trauma ICU (STICU)
  • Toxicology (Maryland Poison Center) This learning experience is located in Baltimore; however, residents may participate virtually or in-person. If choosing to participate in person, housing or other expenses will be the responsibility of the resident. 

Required longitudinal (~45-52 weeks):

  • Decentralized pharmacy practice (~45 weeks)
    • Starting in late August/early September, (two) 8-hour shifts every third weekend in ED (208 hours)
    • First two weekends will have double coverage for orientation/training
    • (One) 4-hour weekday order verification shift every third week (52 hours); a.m. or p.m. based on primary learning experience
    • (One) 8-hour shift on one major and one minor holiday (additional 16 hours)
  • Practice management (48-50 weeks dependent on duration of orientation)
    • Protocol/guideline development
    • Participate in interprofessional committees and workgroups related to EM practice
    • Develop and deliver an educational presentation for providers and/or nursing
    • Assist with nursing education (at least two presentations)
  • Research (51 weeks)
    • Includes IRB submission, presentation of results at a regional/national conference and completion of a manuscript suitable for publication
    • Includes four project days (one/quarter)

Presentations and required certifications:

  • Continuing education presentation, ACPE accredited
  • Medication use evaluation (15-week block scheduled in Q3)
  • Case presentation
  • Topic-based presentation
  • PALS, ATLS (audit), ENLS

Includes five self-scheduled project days, in addition to one project day per month (August-June) to assist with completion of practice management activities

Teaching opportunities:

  • Serve as co-preceptor for an APPE student of PGY1 resident during Adult EM II
  • Serve as primary preceptor for an APPE student or PGY1 resident during EM precepting

  • ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting (December)
  • National Medication Emergency Medicine Conference (spring)
