Inova Fairfax Medical Campus PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program: Overview

The Inova Fairfax Medical Campus PGY1 pharmacy residency program has been ASHP accredited since 1990. Our post-graduate training program is designed to prepare pharmacists to pursue a clinical pharmacy career in a health system environment. Our residents have gone on to become patient care clinical pharmacists in a hospital setting or have gone on to matriculate into a PGY2 residency training program in their area of choice.

The primary emphasis of the PGY1 pharmacy residency program is to build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and promote the development of key practice skills that will grow our trainees into confident, competent clinical pharmacy clinicians. PGY1 pharmacy residency programs focus on general competencies in managing medication-use systems and support optimal medication therapy outcomes for patients with a broad range of disease states. Our site allows opportunities in a number of various specialty areas such as critical care, cardiology, pediatrics, oncology and organ transplant.

Residents will also be given the opportunity to develop and enhance their practice management and leadership skills through focused departmental responsibilities.

Curriculum

I. Orientation (6 weeks)

• Inova New (Inova's new team member orientation held on the first day of residency)
• Comprehensive orientation to the operational and clinical services provided by the Department of Pharmacy; includes departmental competencies, aseptic technique, online learning modules
• Orientation to the residency program, including the residency manual and policies, The Standard (including the purpose statement), applicable competency areas, goals and objectives, and required and elective learning experiences
• Electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) training (typically during the week of Inova New)
• Resident lecture series, to include a session on well-being and resilience
• All residents: BLS, ACLS certification if not currently certified

II. Clinical Rotations

Residents will be exposed to a wide variety of required and elective experiences, 5 weeks in duration, as well as longitudinal experiences that last the duration of residency. The schedule will be determined by the resident and the residency program director during the orientation period but can always be subject to change.

III. Pharmacy Practice Experience (~45 weeks)

• Starting in August (2) 8-hour shifts every 3rd weekend
• (1) 8-hour shift on one major and one minor holiday (additional 16 hours)
   

IV. Code Response (~45 weeks)

• Starting in August, coverage of inpatient adult codes (cardiac arrests, difficult airways, and strokes) Monday through Friday from 0800 to 1630 every 4th week

V. Research Project (51 weeks)

• Includes IRB submission, presentation of results at regional/national conference, and completion of manuscript suitable for publication
• Includes 20 project days in December

VI. Committee Leadership Involvement (~45 weeks)

• Serve as a co-lead for a system subcommittee (pediatrics, oncology, antimicrobial stewardship, surgery, or hospital medicine)

VII. Teaching Opportunities

• Serve as co-preceptor for an advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) student (1 required)
• Participate in VCU School of Pharmacy Foundations Course (i.e., skills lab) (6 required)
• Faculty appointment at Virginia Commonwealth School of Pharmacy, IFMC Satellite Campus
• Enrollment in a Teaching and Learning Certificate Program (optional)

X. Virginia Licensure

• Candidates must be eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia
• Candidates must be licensed in the state of Virginia as pharmacists by July 1 of the incoming residency year
