Learning experiences

Residents will be exposed to a wide variety of required and elective experiences. The schedule will be determined by the resident and the residency program director during the orientation period but is always subject to change. 

Required (5 weeks):

  • Orientation (3 weeks)
  • Cardiac ICU
  • Cardiovascular ICU
  • Medical surgical ICU
  • Neuroscience ICU
  • Surgical trauma ICU
  • Advanced ICU (choose two advanced rotation experiences in the adult ICUs listed above based on resident areas of interest) 

Required longitudinal (~45-52 weeks):

  • Decentralized pharmacy practice (~45 weeks)
    • Starting in late August, (two) 8-hour shifts every third weekend in various critical care roles  
    • (One) 4-hour weekday evening order verification shift every third week (52 hours)
    • (One) 8-hour shift on one major and one minor holiday (additional 16 hours)
  • Practice management (50 weeks)
    • Protocol/guideline development
    • Participate in interprofessional committees and workgroups related to CC practice
  • Research (51 weeks)
    • IRB submission and approval process
    • Poster presentation at national conference(s) (e.g., ASHP Midyear, SCCM)
    • Formal write-up of project suitable for submission to a journal for publication

Electives (4-5 weeks):

  • Emergency medicine
  • Heart and lung transplant
  • Hematology/ oncology
  • Infectious disease
  • Pediatric ICU
  • Advanced heart failure or Cardiopulmonary ICU

Presentations and projects:

  • Continuing education presentation, ACPE-accredited
  • Medication use evaluation
  • Case presentation
  • Formulary monograph or drug class review (based on need)
  • Journal club (local or national forum)

Residents may take one project day per learning experience. Additionally, a project rotation block will be scheduled in December/January (~3 weeks in length)  

Teaching opportunities:

  • Serve as co-preceptor for an APPE student or PGY1 resident  
  • Serve as primary preceptor for an APPE student or PGY1 resident  
  • Provide a didactic lecture in the critical care elective at a local school of pharmacy

  • ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting (December)
  • Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Critical Care Congress (March)
