Changes to telemedicine coverage for Medicare patients

Effective October 1, 2025, several telemedicine flexibilities for patients have expired. For patients insured by a government program, this impacts any upcoming virtual visits with your healthcare provider. 

Learning experiences

Over the course of five weeks, residents will be exposed to a wide variety of required and elective experiences. The schedule will be determined by the resident and the residency program director during the orientation period but is always subject to change. 

Required (5 weeks):

  • Orientation (4 weeks)
  • Adult internal medicine
  • Adult critical care (1 required)
    • Medical surgical ICU
    • Surgical trauma ICU
    • Cardiovascular ICU
  • Neurosciences ICU
  • Cardiopulmonary ICU
  • Infectious disease
  • Practice management 

Required longitudinal (~45-52 weeks):

Pharmacy practice experience (~45 weeks) 

  • Starting in late August, (two) 8-hour shifts every third weekend in various roles (208 hours)
  • (One) 4-hour weekday order verification shift every third week (additional 52 hours); a.m.or p.m.based on primary learning experience
  • (One) 8-hour shift on one major and one minor holiday (additional 16 hours) 

Code and stroke response (~45 weeks)

  • Starting in August, coverage of inpatient adult codes and/or stroke alerts Monday through Friday from 0800 to 1630 hours every third week

Research project (51 weeks)

  • Includes IRB submission, presentation of results at regional/national conference and completion of a manuscript suitable for publication

Committee leadership involvement (~45 weeks)

  • Assist the pharmacist co-chair of a System Pharmacy & Therapeutics Subcommittee (pediatrics, oncology, medication safety, antimicrobial stewardship, surgery or hospital medicine)

Teaching opportunities:

In addition to the optional Teaching and Learning Certificate through Virginia Commonwealth University, residents have the opportunity to participate in the following:

  • Precept advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs)
  • VCU School of Pharmacy Foundations course (i.e., skills lab)
  • Rotation specific education for patients, students, providers and pharmacy staff
