Changes to telemedicine coverage for Medicare patients

Effective October 1, 2025, several telemedicine flexibilities for patients have expired. For patients insured by a government program, this impacts any upcoming virtual visits with your healthcare provider. 

Learning experiences

Over the course of five weeks, residents will be exposed to a wide variety of required and elective experiences. The schedule will be determined by the resident and the residency program director during the orientation period but is always subject to change. 

Required:

  • Orientation (8 weeks)
  • Psychiatry
  • Internal medicine
  • Antimicrobial stewardship
  • Critical care
  • Medication safety
  • Leadership 

Required longitudinal (~45-52 weeks):

  • Education: Continuing education (CE) 1-hour lecture presented to Inova pharmacists and precepting students
  • Research project: Longitudinal quality improvement project presented as a poster at ASHP Midyear Conference, platform presentation at a regional residency conference and a manuscript submission to a peer-reviewed journal
  • Staffing: At the beginning of the residency year, residents staff every other weekend to build confidence through repetition. After midyear, the resident staffing schedule changes to every third weekend.
  • Committee leadership involvement: Assist the pharmacist co-chair of a System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Subcommittee (pediatrics, oncology, medication safety, antimicrobial stewardship, surgery or hospital medicine) and complete a formulary monograph and medication class review

Other elective learning experiences may be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability. 

Presentations and Projects:

In addition to the projects and presentations included within the longitudinal learning experiences, the residents also present a variety of other materials including a formal journal club presentation, patient case presentation and medication use evaluation. 

Teaching opportunities:

In addition to the optional Teaching and Learning Certificate through Virginia Commonwealth University, residents have the opportunity to participate in the following:

  • Precept advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs)
  • VCU School of Pharmacy Foundations course (i.e., skills lab)
  • Rotation specific education for patients, students, providers and pharmacy staff 

Conferences:

  • ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting (December)
  • Regional residency conference (April-May)
  • Site visitation to ASHP headquarters (if available)
