Changes to telemedicine coverage for Medicare patients

Effective October 1, 2025, several telemedicine flexibilities for patients have expired. For patients insured by a government program, this impacts any upcoming virtual visits with your healthcare provider.

Under the leadership of Timothy Yu, MD Fellowship Director, the program offers a competitive fellowship experience in Primary Care Sports Medicine.

The program accepts 2 fellows per year for a 1-year training program. The curriculum includes 3-4 days of sports clinic under the supervision of a fellowship trained attending and 1-2 half days of continuity in an AIUM-accredited practice. Fellows spend 2 days with several local orthopedic groups for both an outpatient and operative experience. This includes general orthopedics and fracture management and orthopedic sports medicine, spine, foot and ankle, hand and upper extremity, physiatry and orthopedic oncology.

Our fellows are very active with team and event coverage at various levels. Each fellow will function as a high school team physician as well coverage of Marymount or George Mason Universities. Our fellows are also involved in covering various Washington DC professional sports teams.

In addition, our fellows are actively involved in the planning and execution of coverage for various races, including the Marine Corps Marathon.

Our fellowship program is a founding program of the collaborative sports medicine consortium, closely working together to provide a unique, mutually beneficial educational cooperative. We call ourselves the National Capital Sports Medicine Consortium (NCSMC). NCSMC is currently made up of 4 fellowship programs in the greater Washington, DC Metro Area. These include the tri-service military program based out of USU and Ft. Belvoir Community Hospital, as well as 3 civilian programs: Inova Primary Care Sports Medicine, MedStar - National Rehabilitation Hospital (PM&R based), and MedStar – Georgetown /Washington Hospital Center (Emergency Medicine based). Together, we have 10-12 fellows each year and nearly two dozen full-time sports medicine faculty and cover approximately 20 high schools, 10 colleges, and 10 professional teams as well as several road races/marathons, Special Olympics, ski clinics, and other sports events. We also meet twice weekly for large-group didactic sessions led by multidisciplinary sports medicine faculty.

Our program leads the longitudinal sports ultrasound curriculum which includes 20+ sessions, including regenerative medicine & multiple cadaver/injection workshops.
