Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Many established patients and even some first-time patients will be able to use telemedicine services.

You will not qualify for telemedicine services if:

  • Treatment of your condition requires prompt intervention
  • You have been referred to be scheduled for a procedure

Through a combination of in-person office visits, video calls, and online access to your provider through the MyChart system, we will work with you to provide excellent care in the manner most convenient for you.

If you are an established patient, please call the office where you are normally seen. The office will guide you through the scheduling process and the options available to you. The physician will be consulted to make a final determination who is a candidate for remote telemedicine visits.

If you need assistance in selecting a provider, either visit our website to locate a physician and office location that works best for you or call 877-634-6682. Once you have selected a physician, please contact the office location you would want to be seen at, should an in-person visit be necessary.

You will need a phone or a computer with an internet connection and a camera. Specific instructions are available.

We also recommend you purchase a digital upper-arm blood pressure cuff, which can be bought at a pharmacy or online. Most blood pressure cuffs cost between $40 and $70. Your insurance company may cover this cost, or you can use health savings or flex spending dollars for the purchase. It is important to choose a cuff that fits your arm. Your doctor can help you measure, if needed, and the cuff will have instructions about fit.

First, purchase a digital blood pressure cuff that fits your upper arm. Your doctor can help you measure, if needed, and the cuff will have instructions about fit.

For each blood pressure reading, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare to take your blood pressure reading by finding a quiet space without distraction.
  2. Sit in a chair with your back supported, with your legs uncrossed and your feet on the floor.
  3. Place the cuff on your bare arm above your elbow.
  4. Position your arm so it is supported at heart level. This may be easiest if sitting at a table.
  5. Once sitting this way, rest for a few minutes and then begin the measurement.
  6. Sit quietly without distraction until complete.
  7. Record the value to discuss at your visit.

Video and telephone visits will be billed to your health insurance. Some insurance companies are waiving patient responsibility amounts (copay, coinsurance, deductible) and are allowing video & telephone visits temporarily as a covered service. Individual insurance companies determine their coverage policies. If you are offered an option of doing a remote or "virtual" visit, it is best to contact your insurer to confirm whether that will be covered under your policy.

Inova prioritizes the safety of your information during video visits. Our IT department follows CDC recommendations for the added security of your medical information. Prior to your video visit, the Inova staff will provide you with detailed instructions that will ensure your visit is private and protected.
