Program Details - IMVH Inpatient Rehab Neurologic OT Fellowship

Program Description

Inova Rehabilitation Neurologic Occupational Therapy Fellowship Program is a 52-week program that begins in August of each year. This is a paid position with access to employer-sponsored benefits. The fellow will pay tuition to account for administrative fees and resources. The fellowship incorporates a multitude of clinical and didactic experiences. The fellow will receive clinical practice as a treating clinician while concurrently participating in more than 350 hours of dedicated 1:1 mentorship. The fellow will work collaboratively with members of the interdisciplinary team with dedicated time from experienced clinicians who specialize in neurorehabilitation.

Inova Rehabilitation Neurologic Occupational Therapy Fellowship Program will prepare the fellow to successfully take the AOTA Board Certification Exam in Physical Rehabilitation.

Program Goals

To provide advanced practice training and education of the post-professional occupational therapist in order to:

1. To meet the inpatient rehabilitation needs of the adult population with neurologic and complex medical diagnoses and co-morbidities by developing advanced clinical practice and reasoning skills.
2. To optimize patient performance and outcomes, through delivery of patient-centered care with a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and psychosocial factors.
3. To demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills utilizing evidence-based evaluations and treatment approaches with the adult population with neurological conditions.
4. To demonstrate and integrate knowledge of institutional, state, and federal rules and regulations including fiscal considerations, pertaining to inpatient rehabilitation.
5. To demonstrate knowledge, understanding and implementation of ethical principles and scope of practice in the delivery of occupational therapy services as documented by AOTA.
6. To demonstrate leadership skills by fostering professional growth of interdisciplinary students and through engagement in scholarly activities and presentations.

Curriculum Overview

The goal of the educational experience is to foster critical thinking, clinical application and promote foundational knowledge. Didactic education is offered through a multimodal approach featuring clinical expert presentations, hands-on skills training, online CEUs and learning modules. The in-person education courses are taught by experienced interdisciplinary clinicians and physicians in their specialty area of practice. The fellow will be provided with dedicated administrative time in their schedule throughout the fellowship to complete all didactic education. In conjunction with didactic education, the fellow will manage a patient caseload, allowing for application of these skills in clinical practice. In addition, 1:1 mentorship will be provided during patient care to promote mastery of handling skills, management of the complex neurological patient and behavioral situations.
