Most people who are admitted to an Inova hospital come under the care of a hospitalist – a physician based at the hospital who specializes in the medical care of hospitalized patients. Like many primary care physicians, Inova Medical Group hospitalists are typically trained in internal medicine or family practice. But whereas primary care physicians specialize in outpatient medical care, hospitalists focus exclusively on inpatient (hospitalized) care.
An Inova hospitalist coordinates the patient's care throughout his or her hospital stay. If a patient's condition requires the expertise of several specialists, the hospitalist manages the team of physicians. The hospitalist also coordinates the patient's overall treatment, consulting with the specialists and communicating with patients and their families. Additionally, because our hospitalists are based at the hospital, they are available to see patients as needed.
