If you or a loved one may be experiencing a stroke, it is best to call 9-1-1 immediately and do not drive to the hospital. You can always let them know which Inova hospital is closest to you. All Inova hospitals are certified stroke centers ready to treat acute stroke.

Why understanding stroke and cerebrovascular disease is mportant

Cerebrovascular disease includes all disorders that affect the blood vessels and blood supply to the brain. This includes a blockage, malformation or hemorrhage that prevents brain cells from getting enough oxygen, which can cause brain damage.

Stroke is the most common type of cerebrovascular disease. About 800,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke each year. It is the fifth cause of death and a leading cause of disability. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to your brain is blocked or bursts, causing brain cells to die. When a stroke occurs, it is important to get care immediately to minimize damage in the brain.

Experts in stroke and cerebrovascular disease care

With a stroke, time is brain. It's important to seek medical care at the very first sign of stroke symptoms. All five Inova hospitals have been recognized as experts in stroke and cerebrovascular care by the Joint Commission.

Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Alexandria Hospital, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Inova Loudoun Hospital and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital have all been designated as Primary Stroke Centers. This certification recognizes that Inova meets the national standards for healthcare quality and safety to meet the unique needs of stroke patients.
