Holiday Hours

With the exception of Inova hospitals, Inova Emergency Care and Inova-GoHealth Urgent Care, all Inova outpatient offices will be closed for the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays – Wednesday, Dec. 25 and Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Some Inova care sites have additional closures for the holidays, which will be noted on the relevant location pages.

Balloon Valvuloplasty

Balloon valvuloplasty (also known as percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty) is a treatment that widens a stiff or narrowed heart valve.

An interventional cardiologist guides a catheter through the heart and positions it through the diseased heart valve. Balloons on the catheter inflate, enlarging the valve opening and improving blood flow through the heart and to the rest of the body. This allows the heart to pump more effectively and reduces painful pressure in the heart and lungs.

Conditions Treated by Balloon Valvuloplasty

Balloon valvuloplasty is a recommended treatment choice for children and adolescents with congenital stenotic valves. In adults, it is the procedure of choice for mitral valve stenosis with minimal calcium deposits and as an alternative for severe aortic stenosis patients who are not good surgical candidates.

Our Team

Interventional cardiologists perform the balloon valvuloplasty procedure and other minimally invasive procedures that rely on catheters and small incisions instead of traditional surgery.

Cardiac surgeons also perform the balloon valvulplasty procedure in some cases of stenosis as an alternative to surgery for patients who, because of age or disability, are not good surgical candidates.
