Medical Staff bylaws at each Inova entity require practitioners to maintain current expirables at all times. Failure to renew license or insurance will result in suspension of medical staff privileges at the Inova entity(ies) until renewal is verified by the Centralized Credentialing Office.

The Centralized Credentialing Office monitors expiration dates and reports expiring certificates/licenses to the Medical Staff Offices. All practitioners on staff at an Inova entity must provide Centralized Credentialing with renewed credentials or certificates PRIOR to expiration.

License

  • Renewals must be primary source verified directly with the licensing board by the Centralized Credentialing Office
  • Practitioners will be notified by the Medical Staff Offices prior to the expiration of the above items and advised to update/renew them
  • Licensing boards are contacted to determine which licenses have been renewed
  • The day after expiration Inova entities suspend practitioners who have not renewed their license. Practitioners cannot work at the entity until Centralized Credentialing verifies renewal. 
  • Visit the Virginia Department of Health Professions website to renew your Virginia license(s)

DEA Certificate

  • Copy of renewed DEA certificate must be received by the Centralized Credentialing Office prior to expiration
  • NOTE: Providers must have a Virginia-addressed DEA in order to write prescriptions for patients admitted to an Inova facility. This is applicable even if the provider does not have a Virginia office.
  • Practitioners will be notified by the Medical Staff Offices prior to the expiration of the above item and advised to update/renew it
  • DEA registration website is accessed to determine what DEA registrations have been renewed 
  • Visit the DEA website to renew your federal DEA

Malpractice Insurance

  • Copy of renewed malpractice insurance certificate must be received by the Centralized Credentialing Office prior to expiration
  • Practitioners will be notified one month prior to the expiration of the above items and advised to update/renew them
  • The day after expiration Inova entities suspend practitioners who have not renewed their medical malpractice. Practitioners cannot work at the entity until Centralized Credentialing verifies renewal.

Board Certification

  • Renewals must be primary source verified directly with the certifying board by the Centralized Credentialing Office
