About Mark F. Sewell, MD

Dr. Mark Sewell is a specialty  care physician board certified in maternal-fetal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology.

During his education, Dr. Sewell was drawn to the field of maternal-fetal medicine by its unique combination of evidence-based medical care and compassion in dealing with pregnancies that are denoted to be high risk.

He completed medical school at Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD.  After residency at Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital, he completed a fellowship in maternal fetal medicine at Case Western/MetroHealth in Cleveland, OH, where he honed his clinical and research skills.

His research interests and publications include maternal health conditions such as diabetes and obesity, multiple pregnancies, and fetal and placental abnormalities.

After fellowship, Dr. Sewell worked in Landstuhl, Germany as the Maternal Fetal Consultant in Europe/Africa for high risk pregnancies that occurred amongst American military or state department employees working overseas. Following this assignment, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a Battalion Surgeon in the 4th Brigade, 101st Airborne Division and was awarded the Bronze Star. Returning back to the United States, Dr. Sewell worked at the busiest obstetric hospital in the Department of Defense located at Fort Bragg, NC. He also practiced at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine.

At Fort Bragg's Army Medical Center, he served in multiple leadership positions including Division Chief of Obstetrics, Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Department Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology until his military retirement in 2019.  During this decade at Fort Bragg Dr. Sewell's clinical duties included managing thousands of high risk pregnancies and delivering hundreds of babies.

Following his military retirement, Dr. Sewell was delighted to join the maternal-fetal medicine team at Inova Alexandria and returned to the Washington, DC, area with his wife, Natasha, a DC native and small business owner.
